Mycopunk How To Unlock Mycologist: How to Unlock and What It Does

The Mycologist is the fifth employee, added in 1.0. You unlock her by rescuing her in Expedition Alpha, the level 10 story mission on Ice Floes, and she plays unlike the other four: her abilities build a resource that eats her own max health.

How to unlock the Mycologist

Step Detail
Mission Expedition Alpha
Type Mission-Critical, Story
Region Ice Floes
Minimum level 10
Objective Investigate a signal from the first hazard crew's landing site
Reward 200 XP, Mycologist unlock

The mission does not pay resources or upgrades — the employee is the reward. It also cannot become an Overtime assignment, so it only ever runs as the story mission.

Her abilities

Fungal Skewer (mobility/utility): pull a fungal skewer out of the ground. It immobilizes enemies and consumes infection for extra damage.

Sporelift (utility): launches the character upward and builds infection. Patch 2.0.3 fixed her passive's description, which had said infection builds from Fungal Skewer instead of Sporelift.

Infection (passive): being in combat, taking damage and using Sporelift all build infection. When the bar fills, infection eats your max health — it is not a damage buff you can leave running.

Why the infection mechanic matters

Every other employee's resource is a cooldown. Infection is a debt: the abilities you use to move and to lock down enemies are the same abilities that shrink your health bar. Her upgrade tree exists to manage that trade, which is why it has the most Tier 4 nodes (9) of any employee and the smallest deep pool.

Two of her nodes show the design clearly: Eye of the Storm consumes infection as you fire, applying decay based on how infected you were before you started, and Engineered Infection lets you keep tapping the utility button to place a Fungal Skewer even with Eye of the Storm equipped.

Her upgrade tree

97 nodes across six tiers, the smallest tree in the game. Tier counts: 3 starter nodes, 6 in Tier 2, 6 at 5 skill points, 9 at 9, 6 at 14, and the rest in the deep pool at 18.

The tree is split between infection generation, skewer damage and Sporelift force. Organic Pressure increases Sporelift launch force, Rapid Cultivation makes it recharge faster, and Thorny raises skewer damage.

The Amalgamation exclusive

She is the only employee with a boss-exclusive upgrade. One node drops only from the Amalgamation, which makes the weekly boss relevant to an employee main rather than just a weapon collector.

Skins and cosmetics

11 skins, the smallest pool of the five, plus the same hat system as everyone else. Her default colour is purple (#d429ff), which is how she reads in the employee select screen.

Playing her at 1.0

Her kit was tuned across the launch patches: 2.0.2 added her cape, fixed her skin preview and made Eye of the Storm consume infection properly, and 2.0.3 fixed the infection description. If you read a guide from the 1.0 launch week, the numbers may predate those fixes.

FAQ

How do you unlock the Mycologist in Mycopunk?

Complete Expedition Alpha at player level 10. The mission is on Ice Floes and the employee is the completion reward.

What does infection do?

It builds from combat, damage taken and Sporelift. At full, it eats your max health, so managing it is the core of the class.

Is the Mycologist good?

She is the only damage-over-time employee and the only one whose kit can hurt her own health pool. The tree is smaller than the other four (97 nodes), so her grid fills faster and her choices are more constrained.

If you are planning what to open next, the upgrade grids explained page covers node shapes and rarity, while the threat levels page shows what the harder tiers actually pay.

Sources

Threat, mission, element and resource values were read from the Mycopunk 1.0 build and cross-checked against the official patch notes and the Steam store page. Where a rule is only described in player-written notes, the Steam guide index is the second source.
